I heard about this the other day…
I love Bey, you all know that. But there’s one thing that people probably didn’t realize.
BEY ONLY GAVE CREDIT FOR “SAMPLING” THE SONG. SHE DIDN’T GIVE CREDIT FOR RE-MAKING IT.
So I can understand why Desiree is mad. It makes it look like it is an original song co-written by Beyonce. Re-writing some lyrics (and changing the title) doesn’t make it a completely new song, I’m sorry to say. There is probably a different (and lesser) amount paid to the writers if the song is sampled rather than re-making it. Most likely, Desiree is being cheated out of some $.
Who knows, though. Maybe Beyonce is not responsible for any of these decisions… it could very well be a very greedy record label trying to get the most $ they can. But fair is fair, and this is not.
Also… lawsuits don’t happen overnight. Desiree could’ve started this way before the album was released and she just didn’t have a lawyer, etc.
And… it isn’t necessarily Desiree suing Bey and company. It is the Royalty Network. So for all we know, Desiree may not even be involved with this. So don’t come up in this board calling her a hoe. Let’s keep it composed and mature, guys.
Lastly… in different countries, there are different execs and people in charge. So just because Bey is on Sony in the US and Desree is in the UK, it doesn’t mean anybody that they could get away with it. View them as seperate labels, because that’s what they are. Kelis is on Zomba Records here in the US, but she’s still on Virgin Records in the UK.
I’m still in love with Bey and her music, though. Hopefully the people involved can settle this in a mature and quiet manner.
