Destiny’s Child nabbed the award for world’s best pop group Wednesday night to kick off the 2005 World Music Awards, which selects winners based on worldwide sales figures. The diva supergroup, which also helped open the show, bested Gorillaz, Maroon 5, Il Divo and the Black Eyed Peas. Usher, 50 Cent, Mariah Carey and The Game were among the recording artists up for multiple honours at the awards show held at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Destiny’s Child also took home awards for best-selling R&B group and best-selling female group of all time!! It will be telecast September 13.

Not only did the girls bring home 3 awards, but they were honored by 3 different tribute performances! According to our sources, Teairra Mari, Rihanna, and Amerie performed their version of Lose My Breath, Usher and Babyface “catered” to them, and Patti Labelle did a very special tribute performance. And yes, Destiny’s Child DID perform at this show (Independent Women, Say My Name, Survivor, and Through With Love). We’ll see what all went down on September 13th!
