Two million people witnessed Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation tour in the early ’90s. But only two of them would go on to front the most popular female R&B act of the past decade. Those 11-year-old Houston girls, Beyonce Knowles and Kelly Rowland, already had a group. But they were missing a few things like a sound system, lights and millions of fans. “Me and Beyonce’s first concert was Janet Jackson,” says Rowland, who’ll be in Toronto with Destiny’s Child one last time when their farewell tour plays the Air Canada Centre Aug. 10. (The closest the trio will be coming to Calgary is Vancouver next month.) “We left there cryin’ ‘cause we were, like, ‘We want a stage!’ And ‘We want a big production!’ And that day we really had to think about what we wanted, about how we were blown away by Janet Jackson’s production. “And Chaka Khan blew us away. And En Vogue and The Supremes. They were raw talent and we wanted our show to look like that. We wanted it to feel real, and we wanted it to feel spontaneous.”
