More than 25,000 music fans had a date with Destiny’s Child last night, when the American R&B super group played in Sydney. And if there was ever a chance for Sydneysiders to collectively “shake their booty” this was it. The band’s best known member Beyonce Knowles was front and centre in a gold sequined outfit when the trio arrived on stage at the Sydney SuperDome at Homebush Bay.
The band opened their concert with their classic hit Say My Name and played a pulsating, sexy set, which covered hits from across their career including their latest single, Lose My Breath. Amid wild dancing and screaming from fans, singer Michelle Williams said: “Hey Sydney, we don’t want to see nobody sitting down.” Many of the young women watching the concert said the band’s music represented a new form of “girl power”.
“They first came out when we started partying together as young, independent women,” said Salli Ward, 23, of Newcastle. Like so many female fans attending the concert Ms Ward watched the show with a group of her close female friends.
“Beyonce is a favourite for most people but as a group they’re awesome,” said Kristen Yea, 23, also of Newcastle. Male fans were also thrilled to see and hear the members of Destiny’s Child up close. “They are good-looking, talented girls - it’s exciting to be here,” said Laurence McCleary, 32, of Seaforth. “Intelligence and talent, that combination is certainly bootylicious,” he said.

More than 2,000 fans have packed into a Sydney department store to catch a glimpse of American pop star Beyonce Knowles, in Sydney to promote a new perfume. The 23-year-old posed for photos and signed autographs for people who bought a bottle of the perfume, saying she was involved in developing the fragrance. “I smelled everything,” she said, listing rice pudding as one of the key inspirations.
Knowles is just one of a number of big name stars who have lent their names to a perfume or make-up product. Others include Catherine Zeta-Jones, Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez. And it is rumoured Paris Hilton will venture ‘Down Under’ later this year to launch a fragrance. Knowles is one third of US group Destiny’s Child. Along with Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, the trio launched the Australian leg of Destiny Child’s world tour in Brisbane.
They play Sydney before performances in Adelaide and Melbourne. “I want to walk over that (Harbour) bridge … and go to the beach,” she said of her plans while in Australia. Nineteen-year-old Sydneysider Libby Rowland waited from 8am (AEST) to get Beyonce’s autograph at 5.30pm (AEST). “I have loved her for ages,” a teary Rowland said. “It has been a dream come true to meet her.”
High school student Antony Kontellis was overwhelmed by the meeting. “I have been a huge fan since way back in 1999,” Kontellis, 17, said. “She is absolutely beautiful and so nice and so worth the wait.”

Destiny’s Child singer Beyonc Knowles is in talks to star in a new film called ‘Dreamgirls’. Variety reports the film is an adaptation of the Broadway hit and is a thinly-veiled story of the rise of Diana Ross and the Supremes. The film, which is due to begin production in the autumn in Los Angeles, will be directed by ‘Kinsey’ helmer Bill Condon. Knowles will be seen on cinema screens this summer opposite Steve Martin in ‘The Pink Panther’.
